Our History

A rich history…

Dalton Ranch is situated in the magnificent Animas valley at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, only six miles from historic Durango. Towering red cliffs of the San Juan mountains overlook the 270 acres with the Animas river winding through. Hundreds of Elk once enjoyed the valley, now coined 'the ghosts of the forest' and can still be seen from time to time.

Originally owned by Dalton Land & Cattle Co. local rumors point to the infamous Dalton Gang having purchased the property on one of their many excursions from the California coast to the Mid-west, where they eventually met their demise in the fatal shoot-out in Coffeyville, Kansas.

Dalton Ranch began development for the golf course and housing community on 270 acres in 1991 and the club opened its doors on July 13th 1993. It was designed by the brilliant Ken Dye, who is responsible for other golf courses such as Pinon Hills and Pa Koa Ridge. When the Dalton Ranch Golf Club opened, the clubhouse was still under construction and there was no restaurant, pool, or tennis court yet in place. The pro shop operated out of a trailer at the current clubhouse site.

Dalton Ranch has 262 home sites and more than half of them are built up against the golf course. In the evenings its common to see families out and about, enjoying the beautiful scenery around them. The semi-private club now offers corporate, social, junior executive, and executive memberships. In addition to its other benefits, the patio hosts live music every Thursday evening from 6-8 during summer hours. Dalton Ranch provides a serene and beautiful place to live, play and enjoy a round of golf. Many have said it’s the best place to live or visit in the valley.
